Êtes means "are." It is the second-person plural (you all) or formal second-person singular (you) conjugation of the irregular verb *être* (to be).

USAGE

This form is exclusively used with the pronoun *vous*.

Examples:

*Vous êtes fatigués.* (You all are tired.)

*Madame, vous êtes très gentille.* (Madam, you are very kind.)

TRAPS

Do not confuse êtes with *es* (informal singular "you are") or *est* (he/she/it is). êtes always pairs with *vous*.
